Jonathan’s Story – Life at Nexa with Jonathan Sara
For the second instalment in our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey on becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Jonathan Sara.
Meet the consultant…
Jonathan is a property lawyer who specialises in prime residential conveyancing. Here’s what he told us:
“I’ve been lucky enough to have a pretty varied legal career within the property sphere. I qualified at Witham Weld, a firm based in Pimlico, London. Then I made the move to a niche commercial firm, PDT, in Horsham, but returned to London to head up the property team at Seth Lovis & Co. in Covent Garden which was a mid-sized, predominantly litigation practice.
I was subsequently a sole practitioner but I found it was just not economically viable to renew my professional indemnity insurance due to the insurance squeeze which came after Brexit and the Covid pandemic. I was looking for alternative ways to practise but didn’t want to give up the independence and flexibility I enjoyed as a sole practitioner – a new model consultancy law firm seemed the obvious answer. I was attracted to the idea of working for myself, when and where I wanted.
What I particularly enjoy about being a consultant at Nexa is that the freedom comes within such a well-structured and supportive environment – you really feel like you are a valued member of a bigger team. Now that I have experienced this “best of both” worlds, I would find it incredibly hard to go back to traditional ways of working.
Over the years I have been an employee, a partner, a sole practitioner and a consultant. Of course there are pros and cons in every role, but what I would say to any solicitor considering becoming a self-employed consultant is to narrow down and focus on what is really important to you and the way you want to work, then go for it – the thought of change is far scarier than the reality!”
