Tamasin’s Story – Life at Nexa with Tamasin Curtis
Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Tamasin Curtis.
Meet the consultant…
Tamasin is a solicitor with extensive experience in property who specialises in residential conveyancing and also does private client work. Prior to joining Nexa at the end of 2020, she worked for various large and small high street firms in Essex. Here’s what she had to say:
“Despite the focus on retaining women in law in recent years, finding the flexibility which is the key to this is still not easy. I would say that it continues to be something which is less than enthusiastically embraced by many law firms.
I worked part-time when I was in private practice, and my impression was that this was not the preferred option for the management of the firm. I started to think about alternatives.
As a Mum to a young child, flexibility is everything; I need to be able to take and collect my son from school and I don’t want to miss out on the precious opportunities to attend school assemblies, sports days and lunches – why should I? But my career is also important to me. I love working with my clients and helping them achieve their objectives, I didn’t want to give that up either.
A friend at Nexa spoke very highly about legal consultancy so I plucked up the courage to make some change and had a chat with Nexa co-founder, Eliot Hibbert. He was able to answer all my questions, and more, and really set my mind at rest – the rest is history!
I was reassured that Nexa could deliver all the back-office support I would need and that I would be given total freedom to look after my clients and run my matters how I wished. Most importantly for me, that meant deciding the hours I worked.
The one piece of advice I would give anyone going down the self-employed consultant route is to have an IT back-up plan. At one point my laptop let me down and, although Nexa were incredibly helpful at getting me back up and running, I was out of action for a few days which was frustrating.
My experience at Nexa has been entirely positive. The management and support staff are always incredibly responsive, helpful and supportive – nothing is ever too much trouble. You really do feel like you are part of a family and there is a lovely community you can easily tap into to help with queries or a second pair of eyes. Everyone, including the management are very approachable – it really has been a breath of fresh air and I have no regrets about making the switch to consultancy.”
